Whiplash After a Car Accident in Mukilteo — What You Need to Know (And What Most People Get Wrong)

By Dr. Greg Beasley, Beasley Chiropractic LLC — Mukilteo, WA

If you've been in a car accident anywhere in the Mukilteo, Everett, or Lynnwood area, there's a good chance your neck felt fine at the scene. You checked your car, exchanged insurance, maybe even drove home. Then two or three days later — sometimes a full week later — your neck stiffened up, your head started pounding, and turning to check your blind spot became something you dreaded.

That delay is one of the most important — and most misunderstood — things about whiplash. And it catches people off guard every single time.

What whiplash actually is

Whiplash happens when your head is thrown forward and snapped back in a fraction of a second during a collision. That motion strains the muscles, ligaments, and soft tissues in your neck far beyond their normal range. Even in low-speed fender-benders — the kind where the car looks fine — the force transferred to your neck can be significant.

Common symptoms include:

Neck pain and stiffness that worsens over the first few days Headaches, often starting at the base of the skull Shoulder and upper back pain Dizziness or difficulty concentrating Jaw pain or tightness (more common than people expect) Fatigue that doesn't match how much you're sleeping

The tricky part: your body releases adrenaline in the moments after a crash, which can mask pain entirely. By the time that wears off, inflammation has set in — and that's when things start to hurt.

Why "wait and see" is usually the wrong call

I've been treating accident patients in Mukilteo for over 32 years. One of the most common things I hear is: "I thought it would go away on its own." Sometimes minor strains do resolve. But whiplash that goes untreated — or that gets managed with nothing more than pain medication — has a real tendency to become a chronic problem.

Scar tissue forms in injured soft tissue. Joints that aren't moving properly start compensating in ways that create new problems downstream. Headaches that started after the accident become a permanent fixture. Patients who come in six months later are often dealing with a much harder recovery than the ones who came in within the first week.

Early treatment matters. A lot.

What treatment actually looks like at Beasley Chiropractic

My office is intentionally small and one-on-one. When you come in, you're the only patient I'm treating — not one of ten people moving through a busy clinic. That matters because whiplash injuries vary enormously from person to person, and what helps one patient can be wrong for another.

Here's how I approach it:

A thorough evaluation first. Before anything else, I want to understand exactly what happened, where you hurt, and how your body is moving. That means going through your history, assessing your range of motion, and checking for signs of nerve involvement. I'm not rushing to the table — I'm trying to understand the full picture.

Gentle, targeted chiropractic adjustments. Once I know what we're dealing with, I use precise adjustments to restore proper alignment in the cervical spine. This reduces pressure on irritated nerves, improves joint mobility, and gives your body a better environment to heal. I always work within your comfort level — especially in the early stages when inflammation is still active.

Soft tissue work. Myofascial release helps address the muscle tension and spasm that accompany whiplash. Tight, guarded muscles are your body's attempt to protect injured tissue — but that guarding itself becomes painful over time. Releasing that tension is often what gives patients the most immediate relief.

Spinal traction when appropriate. For injuries involving disc compression or nerve irritation, traction gently decompresses the affected joints and creates space for healing.

Home care guidance. What you do between appointments matters. I'll give you specific stretches, postural cues, and activity guidance tailored to where you are in recovery. Not generic handouts — instructions based on your injury and your life.

The insurance question everyone has

Most people don't realize that Washington State requires auto insurance policies to include Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage. That means your own car insurance covers chiropractic care after an accident — regardless of who was at fault.

I've been navigating PIP claims for decades. My office handles the billing directly with your insurance company, so you're not left managing paperwork while you're trying to recover. If you have questions about how your coverage works, call us — we'll walk you through it.

Don't wait to find out if you're injured

If you've been in an accident in the Mukilteo, Everett, Lynnwood, or Edmonds area — even if you feel okay right now — it's worth getting evaluated. A thorough exam costs you nothing compared to dealing with chronic neck pain six months from now.

Same-day appointments are available for accident patients. Call us at 425-561-4772 or visit beasley-chiro.com to schedule.
